The Nalanda Open University was launched in March, 1987 through a regulation, promulgated by the Government of Bihar and it is the only University in the State of Bihar meant for imparting studying exclusively by the organization of distance education. The University was Later, Nalanda Open University Act, 1995 was passes by the Bihar General assembly, replacing the Ordinance, and the University came under the authorization and legal power of the new Act automatically. The University is called after the renowned Nalanda University of Ancient India. The University is accredited through the Distance Education Council, UGC, and Ministry of HRD, Government of India for imparting educational activity through distance mode.
