Tamil University was launched on1981
at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, India. It
was instituted to offer higher research in the Tamil language and advanced field
of study in allied branches such as linguistics, translation, lexicography,
music, drama and manuscriptology. The university is enshrined with the slogan
“Ulluvathellam Uyarvullal,” which thinks of “always think positively and only
supreme thoughts.” The university is located in a campus of almost 900 acres.
The University Grants Commission gave identification to the university in 1983.
The University started out conducting academic research by providing M.Phil.
and Ph.D programmes in various disciplines In 1992.
